So. After reading the first two books of Otherland, Snow Crash, and the setting of Shadowrun, I'm just about ready to give up on cyberpunk. Too soon? Should I actually bother reading Neuromancer, or will I laugh just as loudly as I did at Shadowrun? ((granted, there are at least no elves in Neuromancer)

I'm not big on steampunk myself, but I kind of liked The Diamond Age. There are no elves so far as I remember.

Shadowrun is awesome. Elves with cyberware! WHEEEEEE.

I love it. Neuromancer is good, but I also liked Snow Crash, so maybe you won't like it.

I suppose I should mention that I *did* like Snow Crash but I'm pretty sure I liked it despite the cyberpunk elements. I'm willing to try Neuromancer for the sake of trying it, though.

And reading a bit more of Shadowrun gets me over the initial kneejerk response to the history section. It's certain elements of cyberpunk I find annoying; not cyberware but "megacorps," not hacking but annoying pseudo-hip terminology.

If you didn't like those, I don't know that Neuromancer can somehow redeem the genre, since I think it's a lot less fun. But it's worth a shot.
